A car has 4 tyres and 1 spare tyre. Each tyre can travel a maximum distance of 20000 kms before wearing off. What is the maximum distance the car can travel before you are forced to buy a new tyre? You are allowed to change tyres an unlimited number of times.

  1. After the first 5000 kms replace 1 with 5.

    Remaining distances (1,2,3,4,5) =(15000, 15000, 15000, 15000, 20000)

  • After the first 10000 kms Put 1 back to its original position and replace 2 with  5. Remaining distances

   Remaining distances (1,2,3,4,5) =(15000, 10000, 10000, 10000, 15000)

  • After the first 15000 kms Put 2 back to its original position and replace 3 with 5. Remaining distances

   Remaining distances (1,2,3,4,5) =(10000, 10000, 5000, 5000, 10000)

  • After the first 20000 kms   Put 3 back to its original position and replace 4 with 5. Remaining distances

    Remaining distances (1,2,3,4,5) =(5000, 5000, 5000, 0, 5000)

   So the max distance a car can travel = 25000 kms
